Before

I was planning a trip to the Grand Canyon and wanted to hike the Havasupai trail.

I didn’t know where to stay before the hike, which nearby hikes would be worth doing the day before, or what hotel was closest to the trailhead. I wasn’t even sure if there were bathrooms at the campground.

What changed

I told ChatGPT which hike we wanted to do and how long our trip would be.

Then I asked it where we should stay before and after, and what we could do if we wanted to get good views of the Grand Canyon before the hike.

Outcome

It ended up planning almost the entire trip.

It recommended hotels, suggested a great hike with views of the canyon before our main hike, and even gave me a detailed packing list.

It was like taking to the worlds expert on traveling the Grand Canyon, basically for free.

How to try this yourself

Initial prompt in ChatGPT:

"We want to hike the Grand Canyon. We have from 4/4-4/11. We have two kids 10 and 12 who are pretty athletic. What’s a good plan? Where would we fly into? Do we rent a car? Where should we stay?"

The prompt once we figured out we wanted to hike Havasupai:

"We are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon. We will be hiking Havasu Canyon, and staying at Grand Canyon Tavern Inn the night before we start that hike. We have a full day before the hike. Should we stay an extra night at the same place and if so, what is fun to do around there, or is there another place we should stay?

Please make a food / water packing list for two adults, a 10 year old, and a 12 year old. Make a separate packing list for equipment. Assume we are staying in a single four person tent, and one mule will carry our stuff down and up."
