Before
In 2024–2025, I took a medical interpreting class to become a certified medical interpreter. After the class ended, I had to prepare for the official certification exam. Before using AI, studying would have been tedious and time-consuming. I would have spent many days compiling notes, organizing information, and writing my own study guides just to create the materials I needed. The process of building practice questions and review materials felt like a project in itself, which meant less time actually studying the content.
What changed
I requested ChatGPT to generate a practice test for the NBCMI medical interpreters written exam. Knowing that the exam would consist of 50 questions and the specific topics it would cover, I asked the AI to create a practice test tailored to these parameters. I was able to request different versions each time, which allowed me to study various types of questions and better prepare for the actual exam. After completing each practice test, the AI provided an answer key for me to check my responses. Additionally, it enabled me to print the practice tests, allowing me to take them repeatedly.
Outcome
I was amazed that something that would normally take me many days was done in just a few minutes. This saved me a significant amount of time and made my studying much more efficient. Instead of spending hours creating materials, I could focus on reviewing and understanding the content. The practice tests helped me feel more confident and prepared going into the exam, and I ultimately passed the certification test.
How to try this yourself
Step 1: Data Digestion & Organization
Prompt: "I am preparing for a Medical Interpreter Certification exam. I am going to provide you with my lecture notes and terminology lists from my recent course. Please organize these into a structured study guide categorized by medical specialty (e.g., Cardiology, Oncology, Pediatrics). For each term, include the English definition and leave a blank space for the target language equivalent so I can use it as a worksheet."
Step 2: Role-Play and Scenario Practice
Prompt: "Act as a certification examiner. Create a complex dialogue script between a doctor and a Spanish-speaking patient regarding a [Specific Diagnosis, e.g., Type 2 Diabetes management]. Include idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances. Provide the script in a 'consecutive interpreting' format where you give me a segment in English, wait for me to translate, and then provide the next segment in Spanish for me to translate back."
Step 3: Testing
Prompt: "Generate a 50-question multiple-choice practice exam based on the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) standards. Focus on:
1) Medical Ethics and Standards of Practice.
2) Medical Terminology and Anatomy.
3) Cultural Competency.
After I submit my answers, provide a detailed rationale for each correct answer and identify the specific areas where I need further review."
