AI saved my first Bengali conversation

I run a consumer travel startup and needed to film content at a newsstand in Bryant Park. To do that, I needed the vendor’s permission to film him and his stand. The vendor spoke Bengali, and I do not.

That kind of conversation would normally mean a lot of improvising, guessing, or giving up on the interaction entirely.

We were able to go back and forth fluidly, in a way that I'd never experienced with translation apps.

The vendor’s face lit up the moment he heard natural Bengali coming from my phone. He understood immediately and felt comfortable.

He happily agreed to let us film at his stand.
